There's a shift happening in product design that most teams haven't fully processed yet, and it's going to change how interfaces get built in a way that's more fundamental than any visual trend. This shift affects how we structure, label, and test interfaces, demanding new approaches from teams at every stage. In practice, day to day, it changes not just who you're designing for, but also how you ensure your work is understood, both by people and by machines.
You are no longer designing only for people.
The New User You Didn't Plan For
For most of the history of digital product design, the model was simple. A human sits in front of a screen. They look at the interface you designed. They make a decision. They click something. You optimize for that.
The model is changing.
In practice, this means your digital product is increasingly accessed not by a person looking at a screen, but by an AI agent, a voice assistant, a search crawler with generative AI capabilities, or an automated workflow tool, all of which are trying to understand your product and represent it to a human elsewhere.
Google's AI Overviews already answer questions before users ever reach your site. AI assistants are booking, summarizing, and taking actions within products on behalf of users. If your interface only makes sense to a human looking at it, you're invisible to a growing share of the ways people actually interact with digital products.
What This Means in Practice
This isn't abstract. Here are concrete things that are already happening.
AI search summaries. When someone searches for information your product could answer, an AI system may summarize it without the user ever visiting your page. Whether your product shows up in that summary and how accurately it's represented depend partly on how clearly the content is structured. Ambiguous copy, buried information, and unclear hierarchy all make it harder for a machine to interpret your product correctly.
Agentic workflows. AI agents are being used to navigate interfaces and complete tasks on behalf of users. If your button labels are vague, your forms have unclear fields, or your error states are confusing, the agent fails the task just like a human would, except the human might try again, and the agent might just stop.
Voice interfaces. Voice assistants interpreting your product need clear, unambiguous content. The visual hierarchy that helps a human skim a page doesn't translate to audio. If your product only makes sense visually, it doesn't make sense to a voice interface at all.

The Design Implications
As one UX researcher framed it recently: "It forces you to think beyond how your product looks and ask a new question: Can machines understand it well enough to represent it accurately? If not, you're invisible in the new AI-mediated web."
This changes some practical things about how interfaces should be designed.
Semantic clarity matters more than ever. What a button says should not require visual context to understand. "Submit" with no surrounding context is harder for a machine to interpret than "Complete your booking." Label your actions for what they do, not for how they appear in the surrounding layout.
Information hierarchy should be structural, not just visual. A machine reading your page doesn't see that something is in a bigger font and therefore more important. It needs the hierarchy to be expressed through both structure and style. Proper heading levels, clear content organization, and logical flow all help.
Error states and edge cases need to be explicit. A human can often figure out what an ambiguous error state means from context. An AI agent or automated workflow cannot. Your error messages need to explain exactly what went wrong and exactly what to do next.
Content should be able to stand on its own. If a piece of information only makes sense in the visual context of the rest of the screen, it won't survive extraction by a system that reads content rather than renders it. Write for legibility in isolation, not just in context.

Products Already Adapting to MX Principles
Some products have been building toward machine-readability before it had a name, mostly through accessibility work that shares the same underlying logic, and the results show what good MX design looks like in practice.
Stripe's documentation is one of the clearest examples of content designed to be understood by both humans and machines simultaneously. Every API endpoint, every parameter, every error code has a consistent structure, an unambiguous label, and a self-contained description that doesn't require reading surrounding context to interpret. This was built for developers, but it also makes Stripe's documentation one of the most accurately represented products in AI-generated summaries and coding assistant outputs.
GOV.UK has spent years building one of the most semantically rigorous content systems in digital design. Every page has a clear primary heading, consistent content patterns, and copy written for plain language comprehension. The result is that GOV.UK content is reliably accurate when surfaced by AI systems, which matters enormously for a platform where misinformation has real consequences. Their design system documentation explicitly addresses machine readability as a design goal, not an afterthought.
Linear's interface is a useful example at the application level. Every issue, every label, every action in the product has a consistent, unambiguous naming convention that makes the interface navigable by keyboard shortcuts, scriptable through the API, and interpretable by AI tools that integrate with it. Users regularly build automated workflows on top of Linear because its semantic structure is clear enough to support them.
The pattern across these products is consistent: the investment in structural clarity was made for human usability reasons, and machine readability came along for free. That's the right order of operations. You're not building for machines at the expense of people. You're building with enough structural integrity that both benefit.

Tools and Frameworks for Assessing Machine Readability
The good news is that many tools for assessing machine readability already exist, as the problem overlaps significantly with accessibility testing, SEO auditing, and structured content evaluation.
Axe and Lighthouse are the starting points for most teams. Lighthouse's accessibility and SEO audits identify the most common machine-readability failures: missing heading hierarchy, unlabeled form fields, images without alt text, buttons without descriptive labels, and pages without a clear meta structure. Running these audits on your product and fixing what they surface is the single highest-leverage first action for improving machine readability.
WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool) goes deeper on structural issues, flagging empty links, missing form labels, and content that relies entirely on visual positioning to communicate meaning. Every issue it flags would also confuse an AI agent navigating your interface.
Schema markup validators from Google and Schema.org let you test whether your structured data is correctly implemented and machine-interpretable. For products that appear in search results, this directly affects whether AI-generated search summaries accurately represent you.
Screen reader testing remains the most direct proxy for machine readability at the content level. If NVDA or VoiceOver can navigate your interface coherently and read your content accurately, the structural layer of your product is in reasonable shape. If it produces confusing output, you have machine readability problems regardless of how good the visual design looks.
For design teams working in Figma, the Stark plugin provides accessibility auditing inside the design file, catching issues before they reach development. Building these checks into the design review process rather than catching them post-build is significantly more efficient.
None of these tools specifically audits for AI agent readability because that testing methodology is still emerging. But fixing what these tools flag addresses the structural problems that make products invisible or misrepresented in machine-mediated contexts.

How Design and Development Teams Need to Collaborate Differently
MX design doesn't fit neatly into the current model for how most design and development teams work together, and the gaps in that model are exactly where machine-readability problems arise.
The most common issue is the semantic layer getting lost in the handoff. A designer creates a "Go" button because it looks clean in the layout. A developer implements it as a "Go" button because that's what the spec says. Nobody in the process asked whether "Go" communicates sufficient meaning without visual context. The machine encounters "Go" and has no idea what it does.
Fixing this requires the conversation about semantic meaning to happen during design rather than after development. That means designers need to think about copy and labels as functional specifications, not just visual elements. And it means developers need to flag cases where implementation choices, such as using a div instead of a semantic button element, undermine the design's accessibility and machine-readability.
A few specific workflow changes that make a real difference.
Add a machine readability check to design reviews. Before any screen is approved for development, run it through this question: if you removed all visual styling and read only the text and labels, would the interface still make sense? If a button's purpose is ambiguous without context, the label needs to change.
Include semantic structure in design handoff documentation. Rather than just specifying visual styles, document the intended heading hierarchy, the purpose of each interactive element, and the content relationships between sections. This gives developers the information they need to implement the structural layer correctly, rather than guessing.
Build a shared vocabulary between design and development for semantic elements. Teams that have agreed definitions for what constitutes a heading, a label, a description, and an action, and have mapped those to both design components and HTML elements, produce far more consistent machine-readable output than teams that treat these decisions as belonging exclusively to one discipline.
Make accessibility testing part of the development definition of done. A feature isn't finished until it passes a basic accessibility audit. This is the same test that catches most machine-readability issues, and making it a development requirement rather than a post-launch cleanup task ensures it actually happens consistently.
The underlying shift is to treat semantic clarity as a shared responsibility rather than assume it's someone else's job. Designers who write ambiguous labels and developers who implement without questioning them are both contributing to the same problem. The conversation needs to happen across that boundary regularly and deliberately.
The First Concrete Actions to Take
You don't need to redesign your product tomorrow. But there are specific things you can do this week that will meaningfully improve your machine readability without a large investment.
Run Lighthouse on your five most important pages. Look specifically at the accessibility and SEO scores. Fix the heading hierarchy issues and the unlabeled interactive element warnings first. These are the highest-impact quick wins and most of them are copy changes rather than engineering work.
Audit your button and link labels in isolation. Export a list of every button label and link text in your product and read it without any surrounding context. Every one that's ambiguous on its own, Submit, Go, Click here, Learn more, is a machine readability problem. Rewrite them to be self-describing.
Test your product with a screen reader for 20 minutes. Turn on VoiceOver on a Mac or NVDA on Windows and navigate your product without looking at the screen. The experience will show you immediately where your structure breaks down, where content is inaccessible without visual context, and where the interaction model fails to communicate meaning through any channel other than visual layout.
Review your error messages for completeness. Every error state in your product should explain what happened and what to do next without requiring the user, or an AI agent, to infer either from context. Error messages that simply say "Something went wrong" or "Invalid input" fail this test.
These four actions don't require new tooling, infrastructure, or team processes to get started. They require a few hours of focused audit work and a willingness to treat labels and structure as serious design decisions rather than finishing details.
To ensure your improvements last, turn these quick wins into ongoing habits. Schedule a lightweight monthly audit of your key flows using the same tests, or add a simple machine-readability check to your regular design review checklist. Keeping these practices small but consistent makes it far more likely that clarity and accessibility become part of your team's routine, not just a one-off fix.
The Uncomfortable Part
Here's what makes this genuinely difficult.
Designing for machine readability can feel at odds with designing for human delight. The things that make an interface feel beautiful and polished, the subtle visual cues, the context-dependent interactions, the carefully crafted flow between screens, are often exactly the things that are hardest for machines to interpret.
The answer isn't to strip out everything that makes an experience good for people. It's to build the structural clarity underneath it. The visual experience can still be rich. The semantic layer underneath it needs to do more work than it used to.
Think of it like accessibility. Building for screen readers doesn't make your product worse for sighted users. Done properly, it benefits everyone. Building for machine readability is going to be the same kind of shift: something that feels like extra work until you realize it was just good design practice you should have been doing all along.
